My main approach is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or 'CBT' for short, providing structured therapy focusing on the 'here and now'. It is 'problem focused' based on your what you want to achieve from the therapy and is very collaborative, with me working with and listening to you in order to understand your difficulties.
The range of techniques I can use in our sessions to enhance the effectiveness of treatment include behaviour activation, mindfulness, behavioural experiments, cognitive restructuring, exposure and imaginal exposure, while I have done further training in Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Compassionate Focus Therapy (CFT) - I explain more about these various approaches during treatment depending on what is most appropriate for you.
I am also a qualified EMDR practitioner (Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing) which uses bi-lateral stimulation combined with talk therapy in a specific and structured format. It is primarily used with PTSD but there is growing evidence that it can be effective with other presentations such as phobias.
The number of sessions I work with clients on is typically once a week over the course of 6-12 weeks, but there is no one set number of sessions that works for everyone and it will depend on your difficulties and how we can best help you manage them.
Further information about some of treatment techniques I draw on is included in the FAQs section, or to book a free 15 minute online consultation to discuss how I can help you, click here.
